Happy New Year! With the start of the new year, the Jupiter Police Department is excited to announce the implementation of body worn camera equipment to the department. After many months of research, testing, and training, the body worn camera system is fully operational effective January 2018.
There are many benefits to the department and to the community by having a body worn camera equipped on each officer. The department has the opportunity to provide the full unedited version of the body camera video from the officer's perspective.
Another advantage of having a body worn camera program is the expedited resolution of complaints and lawsuits. With the acquisition of body worn cameras, the process of investigating a complaint will be made much easier and judicious by using the evidence from the camera.
This new technology will also serve as an important training tool for our law enforcement officers through review of officer performance, especially critical incidents, such as when a response to resistance is recorded.
Lastly and importantly, the body worn camera will also increase transparency, which is a benefit as it will show our community the department's willingness to open itself up to outside inquiry.
In closing, I hope you have a happy and healthy 2018, and as always, I look forward to seeing you around town and don’t forget to visit us on Facebook, Instagram, and on Twitter for important events and information.
